ELLIOTT ERWITT

Elliott Erwitt was born in Paris, France, and in 1939, he and his family immigrated to the United States, where he studied photography and filmmaking at the Los Angeles City College and the New School for Social Research.  Erwitt served as a photographer's assistant in the 1950s while he was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed in France and Germany. He was influenced by meeting photographers like Edward Steichen, Robert Capa, and Roy Stryker. Stryker hired Erwitt to work on a photography project for the Standard Oil Company, and then after he then became a freelance photographer.

One of the subjects Erwitt has frequently photographed in his career is dogs: they have been the subject of five of his books. He was also awarded the Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal and an honorary fellowship in 2002 in recognition of a significant contribution to the art of photography.

I really enjoy the work that Erwitt has done, mostly the photos with dogs as the subject because I do enjoy dogs almost as Erwitt himself. His photos are always so clever looking like they have such an easy narrative to follow.
